The field trip starts with a 20
min Power Point presentation during which the children are introduced to topics
that they will explore afterwards. Topics covered include: different zones
in and around the pond; water plants adaptations; how insects breath under
water, water birds; food chains and a food web. There are two dipping platforms
in the pond and children will try to catch insects, tadpoles and small fish
with pond nets. The catch of the day will then be placed in fish tanks for
better viewing. With the help of pond dials and keys, the children will attempt
to identify the pond creatures themselves.
A game will be played to illustrate food chains and a food web. Duration:
90 minutes.
Snack break: 20 minutes.
A visit to the bird hide which is overlooking the pond and reed swamps follows.
Here the children will use binoculars, listen to different bird songs and
learn how to identify some water birds. Duration: 20 minutes.
The field trip concludes with a walk through the wetland, following the extensive
footpaths with beautifully illustrated information boards along the way. During
the walk the children will be encouraged to use their senses to discover the
sights, sounds and smells of nature. Duration: 20 min.
Duration of the field trip: 2.5 hours
