This field trip is particularly
suitable for newcomers to the Wetland. It starts with a 20 minute Power Point
presentation with an emphasis on ‘What is a wetland and how different
plants and animals work together to form this ecosystem’. After the
presentation the children are divided into smaller groups to explore the Wetland.
At the hedgerow the children are introduced to the different plants and animals
that live in a hedgerow. Due to time constraints the children will not catch
insects themselves,
but will be given the opportunity to look at pre-collected insects. A brief
visit to the bird hide and a walk through the Wetland then follow. During
the walk the children are encouraged to use their senses to discover the sights,
sounds and smells of nature. The walk ends at the pond where different water
plants will be pointed out. Again due to time constraints the children will
unfortunately
not dip the pond themselves, but will have the opportunity to watch pre-caught
pond creatures in fish tanks and will try to identify them themselves using
pond-dials and keys. Although this field trip gives only a broad overview
of what the Wetland has to offer, the children still have enough time to explore
and discover many interesting facts for themselves. A short snack break will
be given half way through
Duration of field trip: 2-2.5 hours
